SportsNut

THIRD QUARTER 1989

Before the smartphone, before

the internet, before a decent barista,

 there was SportsNut.

In 1989, this was leading-edge technology. We gave it a shot with photos and a compelling story — for 1989, that is. I did manage to get two patents out of this. Sony gave it consideration up to a point. Then they never called back. SportsNut, brought to you by StupidNut.

With The SportsNut play-by-play system, fans are free to concentrate on the game, jump up and cheer, juggle a hotdog and cold brew, and—at the same time—keep an eye and ear on what the “experts” have to say.

(This was the sales pitch)

Every year, consumers spend billions pursuing their passion for sports. For example; the latest annual retail figures for tennis equipment topped $300 million. Downhill skiers accounted for nearly $600 million. And golfers spent a whopping $1.6 billion.*

Numbers like that led us to the largest hardcore enthusiast segment of all: the spectator. And the potential represented by a device that could put every detail of the game right in the spectator’s lap.

Once again, the problem is an

opportunity in disguise.

The avid fan wants to experience every detail of his or her favorite sporting event. And that means listening to the play-by-play, watching instant replays and bringing the action up close.

Unfortunately, that’s often easier to do in a family room than in the bleachers. Even with the advent of compact personal radio receivers and miniaturized TVs, it takes an extra set of hands to keep all that valuable gear under control. And standing up to cheer a spectacular catch on the field can lead to a spectacular, and very costly, crash at the feet.

The answer? The SportsNut, It’s a fully integrated play-by-play system. And it not only puts a full complement of high-technology tools right at the spectator’s fingertips, it keeps them safely out of the way.
